These fetuses, ranging from 4 to 23 weeks gestation, were obtained from Planned Parenthood in San Diego. While selling fetal tissue is illegal, donation is not, and the UCSD contract allowed Planned Parenthood to retain intellectual property rights over the tissue. Controversial pro-life activist David Daleiden and his organization uncovered these emails via a public records request. Daleiden, facing legal charges for past undercover activities, claims Planned Parenthood supplies fetuses that could survive outside the womb, criticizing the organization and highlighting potential ethical and racial disparities in consent forms.
